It is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea. The city serves as a vital economic, educational, and scientific center for the North Caucasus region. It is also a major Russian seaport and a central transport hub. Currently, Makhachkala is one of the fastest-growing cities in Russia. This growth is driven by a significant construction boom. The city is extremely ethnically diverse, though it has a minor ethnic Russian population.

The urban area is quite large in scale. The city itself has a population of over 623,254 residents. If you include the entire urban agglomeration, the population reaches roughly 1 million people.

In terms of regional importance, it is the largest city in the North Caucasian Federal District. It is also the fourth-largest city in the Caucasus. On the Caspian Sea, it ranks as the third-largest city, following Baku and Rasht. This size and location make it a crucial node for regional activity.

The city's history is built upon much older settlements. Its predecessors include the towns of Tarki and Anji, or Anji-kala. Some sources trace these back to the Khazar times. The name Anji means "pearl" in the Kumyk language, making the site the "Pearl Fortress."

Throughout history, the region saw many different groups in control. These included the Umayyad Caliphate, the Seljuk Turks, and the Mongols. Later, the area was influenced by the Ilkhanids, the Golden Horde, and the Timurids. The Safavid and Ottoman empires also held influence in the region at different times.

Russian influence grew significantly in the 19th century. In the 1840s, the Russian Empire seized the Kumyk plateau. This led to the founding of the Petrovskoye fortress. The city was named Petrovskoye to honor the Russian Tsar Peter the Great.

In 1857, the settlement gained town status and was renamed Petrovsk-Port. By 1894, a railway line connected the city to Vladikavkaz and Baku. This helped the city develop as a commercial center. However, reports from 1904 noted challenges like malaria and poor drinking water.

Major political shifts changed the city's identity in the 20th century. During the Russian Civil War, British Royal Air Force squadrons were based at Petrovsk. In 1920, the Red Army invaded the city. On May 14, 1921, the name Petrovsk was changed to Makhachkala. This name honors the Bolshevik revolutionary Magomed-Ali "Makhach" Dakhadaev. On that same day, the city became the capital of the newly formed Dagestan ASSR. Later, after the Soviet Union dissolved, it became the capital of the Republic of Dagestan.

The economy of Makhachkala relies on several key industrial sectors. Oil refineries are the most important industrial component. The city also hosts mechanical engineering and textile factories.

Beyond industry, it is a center for science and media. A regional research center of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located here. This center contains about 20 different research departments. The city also functions as a media hub. Many regional newspapers are published there, such as Dagestanskaya Pravda and the Islamic As-Salam.

Life in the city involves various social and physical challenges. The city suffered major damage during a large earthquake on May 14, 1970. In recent years, the city has faced issues with infrastructure and planning. A 2013 report noted problems with dirty streets and inadequate utilities. Despite this, the city continues to see massive federal investment for reconstruction and housing. The city also maintains large facilities for public life, such as the Dynamo Stadium.
