It sits at a major confluence where the Volga and Kazanka rivers meet. The city is the fifth-largest in Russia. It is also the most populous city within the Volga Federal District. More than 1.3 million people live in the city proper. If you count the entire metropolitan area, the population reaches nearly 2 million residents.

This makes Kazan a vital urban center for the region.

The history of the city is linked to the rivers and local legends. One legend says the name comes from the Tatar word "kazan," meaning cauldron. The story tells of a servant who accidentally omitted a cauldron while scooping water from the river.

Historically, the city served as a border post between Volga Bulgaria and Finno-Ugric peoples like the Mari and Udmurt. Archaeological evidence, such as a Czech coin from the 10th century, suggests urban settlement began around 1004 or 1005 AD. Experts from 22 countries have studied these findings to determine the city's true age.

Kazan has experienced many different political eras. In 1438, Ulu-Mukhamed established the city as the capital of the Kazan Khanate. This period saw a flourishing of trade and handicrafts, particularly in leather and gold. However, the city faced major changes in 1552. After a six-month siege, Ivan the Terrible conquered Kazan. This event made the city part of the Tsardom of Russia. Following the conquest, the city's landscape changed as mosques and palaces were destroyed.

Destruction and rebuilding have shaped the modern layout of the city. Kazan suffered many great fires throughout its history. In 1774, the city was largely destroyed during Pugachev's Rebellion. To fix this, Catherine the Great ordered the city to be rebuilt. She used a grid pattern and stone instead of timber. This period also allowed for the return of religious buildings, such as the Marjani Mosque.

Later, in the 19th century, Kazan became a center for Oriental Studies. Alexander I founded Kazan State University, which helped the city grow as a scientific hub.

During the Soviet period, Kazan played several important roles. In 1920, it became the capital of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. During World War II, the city's importance grew as an industrial center. Many factories were moved to the city to produce military equipment like tanks and planes. By 1979, the population had reached one million people. After the Soviet Union dissolved, Kazan remained the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. It transitioned into a major center of the Russian Federation.

Today, Kazan is famous for its vibrant mix of Tatar and Russian cultures. This cultural identity is visible in its architecture and traditions. The Kazan Kremlin is a World Heritage Site that attracts millions of visitors. In 2023 alone, 4 million tourists visited the city.

The Kremlin itself recorded over 4.5 million visits. Because of its importance, the Russian Patent Office granted Kazan the title "Third Capital of Russia" in 2009. The city is also known as the "sports capital of Russia."

Kazan is a major host for international sporting events. It hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade and served as a host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
