The city sits at a strategic confluence where the Volga and Kotorosl rivers meet. This specific meeting point is a small cape known as the Strelka. Today, the Strelka serves as a contemporary park for visitors. The historic center of Yaroslavl is recognized as a World Heritage Site. It is also a vital member of the Golden Ring, a group of historic cities near Moscow. As of the 2021 census, the city had a population of 577,279 people.

The city's development was driven by its geography and river systems. The confluence of major rivers provided essential routes for transportation. These waterways later became sources of power for the growing area. Because of this importance, many major railways and highways were constructed to intersect at Yaroslavl. Today, the city functions as a major industrial center. It hosts several large-scale operations, including a petrochemical plant and a tire manufacturing plant. It also contains a facility for diesel engines.

Archaeological evidence suggests human activity in this region dates back much further than the city's official founding. The oldest settlements on the left bank of the Volga date from the 5th to 3rd millennium BCE. In the 9th century, a large Scandinavian-Slavic settlement called Timerevo existed near Yaroslavl. This area was part of the Russian Khaganate. Excavations at Timerevo revealed a massive collection of Arabian coins. This hoard was the largest collection of Arabian coinage found in northern Europe. Archaeologists also discovered Scandinavian weapons with runic inscriptions and various chess pieces.

Traditional history attributes the founding of the city to Yaroslav the Wise. He was a prince of Kievan Rus' who ruled the Principality of Rostov between 988 and 1010. Legend says he stepped ashore near the Strelka, where he and his men built the first Yaroslavl Kremlin.

The city's name is directly linked to his name. By the 12th century, religious institutions like the Petropavlovsky and Spaso-Preobrazhensky monasteries were already established. In 1218, the land became the independent Principality of Yaroslavl under the rule of Vsevolod. This principality operated independently until it was absorbed into the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1463.

Throughout its history, Yaroslavl faced extreme challenges from fire and invasion. For its first two centuries, the city was largely constructed from wood. This made the settlement highly vulnerable to disastrous fires that often destroyed entire sections. To combat this, the city eventually transitioned to stone construction. The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery is a key example of this shift. Its cathedral, built between 1506 and 1516, remains the oldest unchanged building in the city. The city also faced violence from the Mongol Horde. In 1257, troops from the Golden Horde under Möngke Khan overran the principality.

Economic prosperity returned to the city during the 16th century due to its position on the Volga. This location allowed for international trade between Moscow and the port of Arkhangelsk. Merchants from England and Germany established shipping berths and warehouses in the city. This wealth helped fund massive building projects and the construction of stone walls with watchtowers. However, the "Time of Troubles" between 1598 and 1613 brought new instability. During the Polish occupation of Moscow, Yaroslavl became a center of political activity. In 1612, the city served as the de facto capital of Russia for two months.

Modern Yaroslavl blends its deep historical roots with contemporary urban life. The city is famous for its many beautiful churches, such as the Church of the Epiphany.
