With a population of 361,644 as of 2021, it is the 50th largest city in Russia. It is the youngest city within the famous Golden Ring of Russia. The city is situated on the Uvod River. This river flows through the center of the oblast.

The geography of the city is defined by its waterways. The Uvod River is a tributary of the Klyazma River. It flows from north to south. This river effectively divides the city into two distinct halves. Two other rivers, the Talka and the Kharinka, also flow through the area. The climate is classified as a humid continental climate, known as Köppen Dfb. This means the city experiences warm summers and cold winters. In July, the daily mean temperature is 18.9°C. However, temperatures can rise above 30°C. January is the coldest month, with a daily mean of -8.7°C. The lowest temperature ever recorded was -46°C in January 1940. Precipitation is highest in July, averaging 70 mm. March is the driest month, with 34 mm of precipitation.

The history of Ivanovo began as early as 1561. At that time, it was given to the Cherkassky princely family by Ivan IV. The modern city was officially created in 1871. This happened when the flax-processing village of Ivanovo merged with the industrial Voznesensky Posad. Yakov Garelin is considered the founder of the city. He was a manufacturer, historian, and public figure. Under his leadership, the city began to industrialize rapidly. Until 1932, the city was officially called Ivanovo-Voznesensk. During the 19th century, it earned the nickname "Russian Manchester." This was due to its massive textile production industry.

Textile manufacturing shaped the social and political life of the city. By the early 20th century, Ivanovo competed with Łódź for textile dominance in Europe. Living conditions for workers were often very poor. This led to frequent strikes by the workforce. A major strike occurred between May and July 1905. This event contributed to the first Russian revolution. During this time, the Ivanovo Soviet was created on May 28, 1905. It was one of the first soviets in history. During World War II, the city was bombed and fought over. In late 1942, French pilots arrived to operate the "Normandie-Niemen" air squadron. They flew 14 Yak-1 fighter aircraft alongside Soviet forces.

Natural disasters have also impacted the city's history. On June 9, 1984, a powerful F4 tornado struck Ivanovo. This was part of a larger Soviet Union tornado outbreak. The storm killed at least 69 people. Some estimates suggest the death toll reached 95. The tornado destroyed or leveled more than 1,180 homes. It was one of the worst tornadoes to hit Russia. The same storms produced massive hail. Some hailstones weighed up to 1 kilogram. This is among the heaviest hail recorded worldwide. Despite these challenges, the city continued to develop new industries after the war.

Today, Ivanovo is a significant educational hub. It is one of the largest student centers in European Russia. The city has a high number of students per 10,000 citizens. There are 13 higher education institutions, including several institutes and academies.

In the 1980s, the region became a major center for students. Currently, young people make up about one-fourth of the population. This includes nearly 98,000 young citizens.

The city is also famous for its unique architecture. Between 1914 and 1934, Ivanovo experienced a "golden age" of building. Many structures were built in the constructivism style. Constructivism is a style of modern architecture from the early 20th century.

Notable buildings include the Regional Bank building from 1927. Other examples are the Ship-building building and the House of the Collective. These buildings were designed by architects from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and local designers. The city also preserves older sites, like the 17th-century wooden Uspenskaya church. These landmarks connect the industrial past to the modern city.
