Geographically, the city sits near the center of the Godavari districts. The massive Godavari River flows just to the west of the city. This river is a central part of the local landscape and economy.

The climate in Rajamahendravaram is tropical, meaning it is hot and humid. There are no distinct seasons like those found in cooler regions. The hottest period occurs from April to June. During these months, temperatures can reach very high levels. In May 2002 and May 2007, the city recorded maximum temperatures of 45°C and 46°C. The coolest months are December and January. During this time, the weather is more pleasant, with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. Heavy monsoon rains often arrive at the end of the summer season.

The history of the city spans many centuries and several different rulers. It was established by Ammaraja Vishnuvardhana the First between 919 and 934 AD. The city became a prominent settlement under the Eastern Chalukya king Rajaraja Narendra around 1022 AD.

You can still see the remains of palaces and forts from the 11th century. Over time, many groups ruled the area, including the Cholas, Kakatiyas, and the Vijayanagar Empire. Later, the Dutch built a fort here in 1602. The British conquered the Dutch settlement in 1857. They eventually converted the site into a central jail in 1870. This jail was very large, spreading over 196 acres.

Literature and social reform are vital parts of the city's identity. Rajahmundry is recognized as the birthplace of Telugu literature. The poet Nannayya, known as 'Ādi Kavi' or the first poet, lived here. He helped translate the Sanskrit Mahabharata into the Telugu language.
