Visakhapatnam is also recognized as one of India's four "smart cities" under the national Smart Cities Mission.

The city's economy is highly diversified and supports many different industries. It is famously known as the shipbuilding capital of India. This title comes from the presence of several major shipyards, such as the Hindustan Shipyard and the Naval Dockyard.

The city also serves as the central naval command for the east coast of India. Beyond maritime activities, the economy includes heavy industries, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. It also hosts growing sectors in information technology and financial technology.

The Visakhapatnam Port is a critical piece of infrastructure, ranking as the fifth busiest cargo port in the country.

Visakhapatnam has a deep history that stretches back to at least the 6th century BCE. The region was historically part of the Kalinga territory.

Throughout the medieval period, control of the area shifted between various powerful dynasties. These included the Andhra Satavahanas, the Pallava, the Eastern Ganga, and the Gajapati dynasties. The city was an ancient port that maintained trade relations with Rome and the Middle East. In those times, large ships anchored in open roads. Small vessels known as masula boats were used to move cargo from the ships to the shore.

European influence arrived in the city through various colonial powers. By the end of the 18th century, the French had established trade operations and colonial rule. Control eventually passed to the East India Company in 1804. The city remained under British colonial rule until India achieved independence in 1947. During the period of British rule, the city was often referred to by the name Vizagapatnam. The name was later shortened to Vizag. Since independence, residents have largely reverted to using the Indian name, Visakhapatnam.

The region holds immense archaeological significance due to its Buddhist legacy. Several ancient Buddhist sites are located near the city.
