It sits in the state of Andhra Pradesh along the Bay of Bengal. The city is the headquarters for the Kakinada district. It is a very important place for culture and business in the region. Many people consider it one of the cleanest and most livable cities in India. It is also the sixth most crowded city in its state. Some people call it the "Pensioners' Paradise" because it is so well-planned.

In the past, a nearby port called Coringa was the main place for trade.

However, Coringa faced many hard problems from nature. Large storms and rising seas caused much damage to the area. A very huge cyclone hit in 1839 and destroyed much of the port. Over time, dirt also filled the river, making it too shallow for big ships. This caused trade to move away from Coringa and toward Kakinada instead.

Kakinada grew very quickly during the 1800s.

By the late 1800s, it was one of the largest ports in the whole Andhra region. In 1891, it was even the most crowded city in that area. The city became a hub for many different types of business and news.
