Spring break is a special time for rest and social fun.

In the United States, schools and universities often give students a break. This vacation lasts for one or two weeks. It usually happens during March or April. While all students get a rest, college students often travel. They look for warm weather and sunny places. For many, it is a time for big parties and meeting new friends.

This tradition started with a simple idea for training.

In the mid-1930s, a swimming coach from Colgate University had a plan. He took his team to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They wanted to use a brand-new Olympic-size pool. The sunny weather was great for early training. Other swim coaches saw this and liked it. Soon, many swimmers began traveling to Florida every year for spring training.

Books and movies helped make spring break famous. In 1960, a book called "Where the Boys Are" was published. A movie with the same name came out that same year. The story showed college girls meeting boys on vacation. Because of this, the number of visitors jumped to over 50,000. Later, a 1964 film called "Girl Happy" featured Elvis Presley. That movie also showed spring break in Fort Lauderdale.

Many different cities became popular spots for these trips. Fort Lauderdale once saw up to 350,000 students in one year. Later, Daytona Beach became a big destination too. In the late 1990s, Panama City Beach began advertising to students. Between 2010 and 2016, about 300,000 students went there. South Padre Island in Texas also became very popular. In the 2000s, it drew up to 120,000 visitors every year.

Spring break connects to many other ways people travel. Some students go to the Caribbean to visit places like Jamaica or the Bahamas. Others visit famous theme parks like Disneyland or Disney World. These parks are very busy during March and April. This happens because different schools have their breaks at different times. This staggered schedule keeps the crowds moving all through the spring season.
