Women's college

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Women's colleges are special schools for higher learning. Most of these schools give out bachelor's degrees to their students. A bachelor's degree is a prize for finishing a college program. Many of these institutions focus on the liberal arts. This means they teach many different kinds of subjects. These schools are mostly for women. Some might let men join their graduate schools. However, the main student body is almost always female.

It is important to know what a women's college is not. They are not the same as finishing schools. A finishing school focuses on social graces and etiquette. Those schools teach things like how to entertain guests. A women's college focuses on a hard academic curriculum instead. Some schools actually started as finishing schools. For example, Finch College and Miss Porter's School once were finishing schools. Now, they are serious academic places for learning.

In the past, women had a hard time finding places to study. Many colleges were only for men. In the United States, women first used academies and seminaries. Leaders like Mary Lyon helped change this. She helped found Mount Holyoke College. Other women like Catharine Beecher also worked for better schools. Beecher wanted schools with permanent buildings and large libraries. These women believed that women deserved a real education.

History shows that the number of these schools has changed. In the 1960s, there were 240 women's colleges in the U.S. By the year 2015, only about 40 remained. This happened because many other colleges began to admit women. This change is sometimes called coeducation. In the United Kingdom, many colleges also became coeducational. For instance, Bedford College began admitting men in 1965. Girton College in Cambridge was a very early residential college for women.

Today, women's colleges still play a big role in the world. There are many women's colleges in places like Asia and Africa. In South Korea, Ewha Womans University was founded in 1886. In India, Bethune College was the first in South Asia. The Women's College Coalition helps support these schools today. They study how these colleges help students succeed. Many women now earn more college grades than men. They are also more likely to finish their degrees.
