Most students in the United States get one or two weeks off. This usually happens in March or April. Many college students travel to warm places for fun.

This tradition began with swim teams. In 1934, a coach took his team to Florida. They went to a new pool in Fort Lauderdale. Other coaches liked the idea. Soon, many swimmers traveled there every year.

Movies and books made the tradition famous. A book called "Where the Boys Are" came out in 1960. It was made into a movie that same year. After that, many more students went to the beach. In the 1980s, hundreds of thousands of students visited Fort Lauderdale.

Today, many places are popular for spring break. Panama City Beach is a big spot for students. South Padre Island in Texas is also a famous place. Some people even visit theme parks like Disney World. Because schools have breaks at different times, these parks stay very busy.
