language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A holiday is a special time. It can be a day for festivals. It can also be a time for rest. The word comes from an Old English word. It meant a holy day.

Some holidays come from religion. Many people celebrate Christmas. Over two billion people celebrate it. Some people celebrate it for faith. Others celebrate it in a secular way. This means they celebrate without religion. In Japan, some people eat fried chicken on Christmas.

Other holidays celebrate a new year. People have done this for thousands of years. Some use the Gregorian calendar. Others use the Chinese or Vietnamese calendars.

Some days are for a whole nation. These are called national days. They might celebrate a country's birth. They might honor a leader or a saint. Most countries have a national day.

There are also days to help the world. Earth Day marks the dangers of pollution. International Women's Day celebrates women's rights. Some holidays are even funny. You can celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day. These days bring people together in many ways.
