Spinosaurus

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Spinosaurus was a truly massive meat-eating dinosaur. Its name means "spine lizard" in Latin and Greek. This name describes the long parts on its back. These parts are called neural spines. They grew from the dinosaur's backbone. They were at least 1.65 meters long. They likely had skin connecting them to form a sail. This sail might have helped it stay warm. It may have also helped it look scary to rivals.

This dinosaur had a very unique way of moving. It lived in a humid world of mangrove forests and tidal flats. Spinosaurus was semiaquatic, which means it lived both on land and in water. Its leg bones had a high bone density. This helped it control how it floated. It also had a long, narrow tail. This tail was shaped like a paddle. This shape helped it swim through the water.

Scientists first learned about this animal through fossils found in North Africa. A geologist named Fernand Foureau found two unusual teeth in Algeria in 1898. Later, a collector named Richard Markgraf found more remains in Egypt in 1912. A German scientist named Ernst Stromer described the first species in 1915. He named it Spinosaurus aegyptiacus. Sadly, many original fossils were destroyed during World War II in a bombing.

We know a lot about its size from new studies. A 2022 study says it could reach 14 meters in length. That is about 46 feet long. It might have weighed 7.4 tons. That is about 8.2 short tons. Its skull was long and narrow like a modern crocodile. It had straight, pointy teeth with very few serrations. It also had strong arms with three-fingered hands. One finger had a very large claw.

Spinosaurus was a giant among its neighbors. It lived alongside many other creatures. These included fish, turtles, and even flying pterosaurs. It was as large as other famous carnivores like Tyrannosaurus. Some researchers even found fossils in Morocco and Niger. They found different species like Spinosaurus mirabilis in Niger. These fossils help us see how big this dinosaur's world really was.
