It belongs to a group called pterosauromorph archosaurs. These were small reptiles that lived millions of years ago. Scientists find these fossils very important for learning about history. They help us see how different animal groups began.

This animal had a very interesting way of moving. It was only 181 millimetres long. That is about 7.1 inches in length.

It had long hind legs that helped it move. Some experts think it hopped like a kangaroo or a springhare. This type of hopping is called saltatorial locomotion. Other studies suggest it might have hopped like a frog.

People first found clues about this animal around the year 1900. The fossils were found in the Lossiemouth Sandstone of Scotland.

Arthur Smith Woodward named the species Scleromochlus taylori in 1907. The main fossil is called a holotype. It is specimen BMNH R3556. This fossil is a partial skeleton preserved in sandstone. Part of the skull and the tail are missing.

Scientists have spent many years debating where this animal fits. It is hard to be sure because the fossils are small. Some researchers thought it was a member of the Doswelliidae. Others placed it in a group called Dinosauromorpha.

In 2020, a researcher named Bennett suggested it was not an ornithodiran. He looked at its ankle and its osteoderms. These features made him think it belonged somewhere else.

New technology has helped solve these old mysteries. In 2022, scientists named Foffa and his colleagues used special scans. They used microcomputed tomographic scans on seven different specimens.

These scans helped them build a complete skeleton. This new look showed it was part of the Pterosauromorpha. This means it is a close relative to pterosaurs. Pterosaurs were the famous flying reptiles of the past.
