It lived in North Africa about 100 million years ago. Its name means "spine lizard." This name comes from the long parts on its back. These parts are called neural spines. They grew from the dinosaur's backbone. They were at least 1.65 meters long. They likely had skin over them to make a sail. This sail might have helped it stay warm. It may have also helped it look scary to rivals.

Spinosaurus had a long and narrow head. Its teeth were straight and pointy like a crocodile's. It had strong arms with three fingers. The first finger had a very large claw. This dinosaur was a hunter. It ate animals from the land and the water. It had very dense bones. This helped it control how it floated in water. It also had a long tail. The tail was shaped like a paddle. This helped it swim through the water.
