Northern pike

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The northern pike is a large fish that eats other animals.

These fish live in fresh water. You can find them in North America and Eurasia. They like to hide in weedy places in lakes and streams.

Pike are ambush predators. This means they lie very still and wait for food. When a small fish swims by, the pike moves in a sudden burst of power. This quick move is called a fast start.

Pike are very strong. They are also quite aggressive. If there is not enough food, big pike may even eat smaller pike. This is called cannibalism. Young pike stay near plants to stay safe from bigger fish. Most pike live for 10 to 15 years. Some can live up to 25 years.
