Northern pike

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The northern pike, scientifically known as *Esox lucius*, is a powerful carnivorous fish. It belongs to the genus *Esox*, which includes other pike species. These fish are found across the Northern Hemisphere in a distribution called holarctic. This means they live in fresh waters throughout Russia, Europe, and North America.

Because they are top predators, they play a vital role in their aquatic ecosystems. They are often found in sluggish streams or shallow, weedy areas of lakes and reservoirs. They also inhabit cold, clear, and rocky waters.

Northern pike are famous for their unique hunting method called ambush foraging. Instead of chasing prey over long distances, they lie perfectly still in vegetation. They wait for a target to swim close before striking with remarkable acceleration. To achieve this, they use a mechanism known as a "fast start." This is a sudden, high-energy burst of unsteady swimming.

During these high-speed bursts, the pike's body forms an "S" shape. To decelerate and stop, the fish makes its body into a "C" shape. This allows them to return to a sedentary position quickly.

Physical appearance varies based on age and specific mutations. Most adult pike are olive green with light, bar-like spots along their flanks. Their bellies often shade from yellow to white. Younger pike are different, featuring yellow stripes along a green body. As they age, these stripes divide into light spots.

Some pike exhibit a mutation called the silver pike. These fish lack the typical rows of spots and appear silver, white, or silvery-blue. They are not a separate subspecies, but a distinct color variation. Additionally, there are hybrids like the tiger muskellunge. This is a cross between a northern pike and a muskellunge. In these hybrids, males are usually sterile, but females are often fertile.

The name "pike" is derived from Middle English, meaning "pointed." This refers to the fish's resemblance to a long, pointed pole weapon. Throughout history, many names have been used, such as "pickerel," "jack," or "luce." The term "luce" was used in the past and is still seen in heraldry.

In North America, the name "Northern" is particularly popular in the Midwest and parts of Canada. Understanding these names helps researchers track the fish's long history in human culture and science.

Northern pike can reach impressive sizes and weights. While the average length is 40 to 55 cm, the maximum recorded length is 150 cm. They can weigh as much as 28.4 kg.

A famous world record was set by Lothar Louis in Germany. On 16 October 1986, he caught a pike weighing 25 kg. Interestingly, pike in Eurasia often grow larger than those in North America. The relationship between a pike's length and its weight is not linear. Scientists use a specific mathematical equation to describe this growth. For northern pike, the constant $b$ is 3.096. This formula helps biologists predict the mass of a fish based on its length.

Behavioral traits like aggression and cannibalism are common in this species. Pike are highly territorial and will fight for space and food. When food is scarce, they may engage in cannibalism, eating smaller pike. This often happens when the predator-to-prey ratio reaches two to one.

This behavior leads to a high mortality rate for young pike. Because of this, young pike require dense submerged vegetation for shelter. Large pike do not need as much cover because they have a better line of sight. This creates a complex relationship between vegetation density and fish size.

Reproduction for the northern pike is tied to specific environmental conditions. They typically breed in the spring when water temperatures reach about 9 °C. Males usually arrive at breeding grounds a few weeks before the females.

Females lay a large number of eggs to increase the chances of offspring survival. However, the eggs will not hatch if the water temperature drops below 6 °C. This species also shows strong homing behavior, returning to specific areas. Their survival is closely linked to stable water conditions and the presence of healthy plant life. This makes them a key indicator of the health of freshwater ecosystems.
