Northern pike

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The northern pike is a large fish that lives in fresh water.

These fish are carnivores, which means they eat other animals. You can find them throughout the Northern Hemisphere in places like Russia, Europe, and North America. They love to live in weedy places in lakes or slow streams. They also like cold, clear, and rocky waters. Because they are such strong hunters, they are very important to the water where they live.

Pike are famous for being ambush predators. This means they do not chase food for a long time. Instead, they lie perfectly still in plants and wait for something to swim by. When they are ready, they use a "fast start" movement. This is a sudden, high-energy burst of swimming that lets them strike very quickly.

To stop themselves after a fast burst, they make their bodies into a "C" shape. This helps them slow down and stay still again.

People have given this fish many different names over the years. Some call it a jack, a pickerel, or even a slough snake. The name "pike" comes from an old word for a pointed pole weapon. This is because the fish has a long head and a pointy nose. In the past, people also called them "luce" or "lucy." These old names are even used in special art called heraldry.

Northern pike can grow to be quite huge. Most are between 40 and 55 cm long. However, the biggest ones can reach 150 cm in length. Some can weigh as much as 28.4 kg.

One famous record was set by Lothar Louis in Germany. He caught a pike weighing 25 kg on 16 October 1986. Most pike live for 10 to 15 years, but some live up to 25 years.

Learning about pike helps us understand how animals survive. For example, young pike must hide in thick plants. This is because big pike can be aggressive and may eat smaller pike. This is called cannibalism, and it happens when food is hard to find.
