They belong to a group called Aulostomidae. This group is part of the order Syngnathiformes. This order also includes seahorses and cornetfishes. The name for their group comes from old Greek words. Those words mean "flute" and "mouth." This name describes their long, tube-shaped snouts.

These fish have a very neat way of hunting. They are carnivores, which means they eat other animals. A trumpetfish will hover almost still above the sea floor. It moves slowly toward small fish that swim in groups. When it gets close, it darts forward very fast. The fish opens its jaws in a quick way. This creates a strong suction force. This force pulls the prey straight into the mouth.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. Carl Linnaeus named the Chinese trumpetfish in 1766. Later, Valenciennes named the West Atlantic trumpetfish in 1841. Wheeler named the Atlantic trumpetfish in 1955. We also know about very old trumpetfish from fossils. Some fossils were found in Russia during the Early Oligocene. Other fossils were found in Germany during that same time.

There are three living species of trumpetfish today. One species is the Chinese trumpetfish. Two species live in the Atlantic ocean. The third species lives in the Indo-Pacific area. These fish can grow to be almost 1 meter long. Their bodies are long and shaped like a pike. Their bodies are also very stiff and rigid. This stiffness comes from bony struts that are woven together.

Trumpetfish live a life very different from most pets. They are mostly found near coral reefs. Some like to live near rocky areas on the bottom. They are not usually kept in home fish tanks. However, some people do keep them in aquariums. There are even websites with tips on how to care for them. They are much more interesting to watch in the wild ocean.
