Tuna have a special way of staying warm in the ocean. Most fish are the same temperature as the water around them. However, tuna can keep parts of their bodies warmer than the sea. They use a system called the rete mirabile, which means "wonderful net." This is a web of veins and arteries that works like a heat exchanger. It catches heat from the blood and moves it back to the muscles and brain.

This allows them to swim very fast even in cold water. Their muscles are often dark red because they have a lot of myoglobin to hold oxygen.

The history of the name "tuna" is very old. It comes from the Spanish word atún, which came from Arabic. Long ago, the Ancient Greeks used the word thýnnos for the bluefin tuna. This Greek word means "to rush" or "to dart along." This is a perfect name because tuna are such fast swimmers.
