Sheep–goat hybrid

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A sheep and a goat are both part of the same family. They look very similar to each other. Sometimes, they can have a baby together. This baby is called a hybrid. People often call these hybrids "geeps."

Hybrids are very rare in nature. This is because sheep and goats are different species. Sheep belong to a group called Ovis. Goats belong to a group called Capra. Sheep have 54 chromosomes. Chromosomes are tiny parts in cells that carry instructions. Goats have 60 chromosomes. Because these numbers are different, many hybrid babies die before they are born.

When a hybrid is born, it is often a mix of both parents. This happens because the baby gets instructions from both the sheep and the goat.

In the year 2000, a male hybrid was born in Botswana. He had 57 chromosomes. This number is right in the middle of 54 and 60. He had a heavy body like a sheep. He also had long legs like a goat. His coat was a mix too. He had a coarse outer coat and a woolly inner coat. Many male hybrids are sterile. This means they cannot have babies of their own.

People have studied these animals for a long time. In 1889, Alfred Russel Wallace wrote about them. He mentioned that some shepherds believed these mixes were fertile. Other people, like Professor Giglioli from Florence, shared interesting notes. In 1751, a man named Buffon found one hybrid. He found eight more the next year.

In Chile, these hybrids are called "carneros lanudos." In France, they are called "chabin." These names show how different parts of the world see these animals.

There have been many confirmed cases of live hybrids. In 2014, a hybrid was born in Germany. Another one was born in Ireland that same year. In 2018, twin geeps were born on an Irish farm. In 2020, a hybrid named Barunka was born in the Czech Republic.

Barunka had some health problems after she was born. Her owners were not sure if she was a sheep or a goat. In 2021, a healthy hybrid was born in Kentucky, USA. Genetic testing showed she had 57 chromosomes.

Scientists can also make something called a chimera. This is different from a hybrid.

A hybrid comes from two parents. A chimera is made by joining two embryos together. This means a chimera can have four genetic parents. Researchers in Cambridge, England, made the first sheep-goat chimeras in 1984. These animals look like a mosaic. A mosaic is a pattern made of different pieces. In a chimera, you might see tufts of goat wool growing next to sheep wool. The cells stay as pure sheep or pure goat cells.
