Sheep–goat hybrid

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A sheep and a goat can have a baby. This baby is a hybrid. A hybrid is a mix of two different kinds of animals. These babies are very rare.

Most hybrids do not survive. This is because sheep and goats are quite different. Sheep have 54 chromosomes. Chromosomes are tiny parts in cells that carry traits. Goats have 60 chromosomes. Because the numbers do not match, many babies die before they are born.

Sometimes, a hybrid is born alive. In the year 2000, a male hybrid was born in Botswana. He had 57 chromosomes. This number was right in the middle of the two parents. He had a heavy body like a sheep. He also had long legs like a goat.

In 2020, a hybrid named Barunka was born in the Czech Republic. She had some health problems after birth. Her owners did not know if she was a sheep or a goat.

Scientists also make something called a chimera. A chimera is made by joining two embryos together. A hybrid has two parents, but a chimera can have four. These animals look like a mosaic of both types.
