Rotavirus is a tiny germ that causes stomach sickness. It is the most common cause of diarrhea in infants and young children.

Most children in the world get infected at least once by age five. This virus can cause nausea, vomiting, and watery diarrhea. These symptoms can lead to dehydration, which is a very serious problem. Dehydration happens when the body loses too much water.

While most children recover, the virus caused about 151,714 deaths in 2019.

How does this tiny germ work inside the body? The virus spreads through the fecal-oral route. This means it moves from waste to the mouth via hands or surfaces.

Once inside, the virus uses a protein spike called VP4 to grab onto cells. The virus enters the cell and forms a small bubble called an endosome. Inside this bubble, the virus sheds its outer layers to reveal its core. This core contains eleven pieces of genetic material called RNA.

The virus then uses the cell to build many new copies of itself.

Scientists have learned a lot about these germs over time. Ruth Bishop and her colleagues discovered the rotavirus in 1973. They used special tools called electron micrographs to see them.

There are eleven different species of rotavirus in the genus. The most common one is called RVA. This specific type causes more than 90% of human infections. Other types can also infect animals like pigs, birds, cats, and bats.

Rotavirus has a very specific and organized structure. It is made of a shell called a capsid.

This shell is built from different proteins like VP1, VP2, and VP6. The virus is very small, measuring up to 76.5 nanometers in diameter. Its genetic material is made of 18,555 nucleotides. There are also special proteins like NSP4 that cause diarrhea. These proteins help the virus grow and spread within the host.

We can protect people from this virus using medicine. In the United States, doctors started a vaccination program in the 2000s. Before these shots, the virus caused 2.7 million severe cases each year. It also caused about 60,000 hospitalizations and 37 deaths annually. Since the vaccines were added, hospital rates have fallen significantly.

Now, many countries use routine vaccines to keep children safe. This shows how science helps us fight tiny germs.
