Tamarins are small monkeys found in the Americas. They are about the size of a squirrel.

These monkeys live in tropical rainforests and open forests. They are arboreal, which means they live in trees. They spend their days jumping and running through branches. Most tamarins live in groups of three to nine members. Some larger groups can have up to 40 members. They eat many things like fruit and plants. They also eat insects, spiders, and even bird eggs.

Life for a tamarin follows a busy pattern. They are diurnal, so they are active during the day. Most tamarins give birth to twins after 140 days. Raising these babies is a big job for the group. Adult males and younger monkeys help carry the babies. They bring the young to the mother so they can nurse. After one month, the babies start eating solid food. They are not fully weaned for two or three more months. They grow up and reach maturity in their second year.

Scientists have studied how these monkeys are related for a long time. A researcher named Hershkovitz recognized ten species in 1977. He used facial hair to group them into different types. Later, a review by Rylands and others in 2016 looked at their history. They found that tamarins branched off from other relatives 13 to 15 million years ago. This makes them a sister group to other monkeys like marmosets.

There are many different kinds of tamarins to learn about. As of 2021, there are 22 species in the genus Saguinus. Some are in the midas group, like the golden-handed tamarin. Others are in the oedipus group, like the cotton-top tamarin. Cotton-top tamarins can live up to 23 years old. Red-bellied tamarins can live up to 20.5 years in captivity. These monkeys vary in color from black to brown or white. Many species have hair that looks like a mustache.

Some tamarins are very good at working together. Scientists Cronin, Kurian, and Snowdon studied cotton-top tamarins to see this. They used a test with a clear box and food. The monkeys had to pull handles at the same time to get a treat. The monkeys pulled the handles more often when they had a partner. This shows they have an understanding of cooperation. This skill helps them survive in the wild. They must always watch for predators like snakes and birds.
