A mandarin orange is a small and rounded citrus fruit.

It tastes much sweeter and stronger than a common sweet orange. The fruit is often shaped like an oblate, which means it is slightly flattened rather than a perfect sphere. When a mandarin is ripe, it feels firm or slightly soft to the touch. It is heavy for its size and has a pebbly skin. One great thing about mandarins is how easy they are to peel. Their skin is thin and loose with very little white mesocarp, which is the spongy part under the peel. This makes it easy to split the fruit into segments.

These fruits grow on moderate-sized trees. The trunks and large branches of these trees have thorns. The leaves are small, green, and very shiny. Flowers grow in small groups or by themselves in the leaf-axils. Some citrus trees are self-fertile, so they only need a bee to move pollen within one flower. Other types are parthenocarpic, which means they do not need pollination and can grow without seeds. A single mature tree can produce a large amount of fruit. Mandarins grow best in tropical and subtropical areas because they are easily damaged by the cold.

Scientists have learned that the wild mandarin is a very important ancestor. It is one of the original citrus species from South China and Vietnam. While the original wild mandarins were bitter, most sweet ones we eat today are hybrids. A hybrid is a plant made by mixing two different species. Most commercial mandarins come from mixing the mandarin with a pomelo. This mix is what gives the fruit its sweet taste. There are even two different groups of domestic mandarins from the Nanling Mountains. One group produces larger, redder fruit, while the other produces smaller, yellower fruit.

In the year 2022, the world produced 44.2 million tonnes of mandarin oranges. This total includes tangerines, clementines, and satsumas. China led the world by growing 61% of the total amount. Spain produced 1.8 million tonnes that same year. Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco are also major producers of these fruits. Different scientists use different ways to name them. The Tanaka system gives many different names to various types. The Swingle system says most are just varieties of one species called Citrus reticulata. The name reticulata comes from Latin and means "netted."

Many people associate mandarins with the holiday season. In North America, people often put them in Christmas stockings. This tradition started in the 1880s with Japanese immigrants. They used to receive oranges as gifts for the New Year. Some people say oranges represent the gold coins from stories about Saint Nicholas. In the past, special "Orange Trains" would ship the fruit east by rail. Today, mandarins are used in many ways. You can eat them fresh, put them in salads, or squeeze them for juice. Even the peel is used to make zest or dried as chenpi.
