Clementines have a deep orange color and a smooth skin. They are often very juicy and sweet. Most people find them less acidic than regular oranges. Because they are easy to peel, some people call them "easy-peelers."

Inside the fruit, you will find several segments. These segments are the small slices that make up the whole fruit. A clementine usually has between 7 and 14 of these slices. The fruit also contains many natural oils in its skin. These oils include things like limonene and myrcene. These parts give the fruit its special smell.

This fruit has a very interesting history. It first appeared in the late 1800s in Algeria. It grew in the garden of an orphanage in a place called Misserghin. A French missionary named Clément Rodier discovered it there. The fruit was named to honor him in 1902.

Some people thought similar fruits grew in China long ago. However, science shows this specific hybrid came from Algeria.

There are different types of clementines to know about. Some are seedless, which means they have no seeds at all. Others are called the Monreal type and have more than 10 seeds. Monreal fruits are often larger and sweeter than the seedless kind. In Spain, many people grow the Nules variety. This type is a mutation of the Fina variety. It is very popular because it is seedless and easy to peel.

Clementines grow well in many warm parts of the world. They do not need as much heat as other citrus plants. This helps them grow in places like North Africa and the Mediterranean. They also grow well in California. In California, they were first grown at a research center in 1909.
