The grapefruit is a large citrus fruit that grows on evergreen trees.

These trees can grow quite tall. They have long, thin, dark green leaves. The trees also produce white flowers with four or five petals. Most grapefruits have a yellow-orange skin and a round shape. Inside, the fruit is divided into many segments. The flesh can be pale yellow, pink, or even dark red. Usually, the red varieties are the sweetest ones to eat.

A grapefruit is a hybrid, which means it comes from two different plants. It was created by a natural cross between a sweet orange and a pomelo.

Both of these ancestor plants came from Asia to the Caribbean in the 1600s. The grapefruit likely first appeared in Barbados during the 1700s. Some people once called it the "forbidden fruit." In 1814, a man named John Lunan used the name grapefruit. He chose this name because the fruit tastes a bit like a grape. Other people think the name comes from how the fruit grows in clusters. These clusters look like bunches of grapes on the tree.

Many different types of grapefruit have been found over the years. In 1906, pink grapefruit was discovered in a large grove. A man named Kimball C. Atwood ran the largest grapefruit grove in the world. In 1929, a "Ruby Red" variety became a big commercial success. This specific variety was later named the official "State Fruit of Texas" in 1993. Scientists even used radiation to create new varieties. This helped them keep the bright red colors that used to fade to pink. One variety called "Star Ruby" is the darkest red of them all.

Grapefruit is a very healthy food for people to eat. The raw fruit is made of 90% water. It also contains 8% carbohydrates and 1% protein. It is a great source of vitamin C. One serving provides about 37% of your daily value of that vitamin. People use the fruit in many ways around the world. In Haiti, people make jam or juice from it. In Costa Rica, people sometimes cook it with sugar to make a sweet dessert.

You must be careful when eating grapefruit with certain medicines. The fruit and peel contain natural parts called furanocoumarins. One specific part is called bergamottin.

These parts can stop an enzyme in your body from working correctly. This enzyme is called CYP3A4, and it helps break down many drugs. If the enzyme does not work, the medicine stays in your blood too long. This can make the effects of the drug too strong or intense. It can cause side effects like dizziness or heart problems. Always check your medicine labels to see if grapefruit is safe for you.
