A grapefruit is a large citrus fruit.

It grows in clusters on a tree. These clusters look like bunches of grapes. This is how the fruit got its name.

The grapefruit is a hybrid. A hybrid is a plant made from two different kinds. It grew from a sweet orange and a pomelo. These two plants first came to the Caribbean from Asia. The grapefruit likely started in Barbados during the 1700s.

The fruit is very healthy. It is 90% water and has much vitamin C.

Be careful with grapefruit juice and medicine. The juice has things called furanocoumarins. These are natural parts of the fruit. They can change how the body uses drugs. This can make the effects of medicine too strong. It can cause things like dizziness or heart issues. Always check if a medicine can be taken with grapefruit.
