A mandarin orange is a small, round fruit.

It grows on trees that have thorns. The leaves are shiny and green. Mandarins taste sweeter and stronger than common oranges. They are often easy to peel. This is because their skin is thin and loose. They also have very little white pulp under the skin. You can eat them plain or use them in salads. You can even squeeze them to make juice.

These fruits have a long history. The wild mandarin is an ancestor of many other citrus fruits. Scientists found that most sweet mandarins are hybrids. A hybrid is a plant made by mixing two different kinds. Most sweet mandarins come from mixing the mandarin with a pomelo.

In 2022, China grew 61% of the world's mandarins. Other countries like Spain and Turkey also grow them. In North America, people often give them as gifts. They are sometimes put in Christmas stockings. This tradition began a long time ago. People used oranges to represent gold coins from stories about Saint Nicholas.
