Grasshoppers are amazing insects that have been around for a very long time. They belong to a group called Caelifera. These insects are some of the oldest chewing plant-eaters on Earth. Scientists believe they date back to the early Triassic period. This was about 250 million years ago.

Today, there are about 11,000 known species of grasshoppers. Many more likely live in tropical wet forests. They are mostly found in warm, tropical areas.

A grasshopper's body has three main parts. These are the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. The head has large compound eyes for seeing shapes and colors. It also has three simple eyes called ocelli to sense light.

The thorax holds the legs and wings. The legs end in claws for gripping. The hind legs are very strong for jumping. The abdomen has eleven segments. The first segment holds the tympanal organ. This organ acts like an eardrum to help them hear.

Grasshoppers grow in a special way called hemimetabolous development. They do not go through a complete change like a butterfly. Instead, they hatch from an egg as a nymph. A nymph is often called a "hopper." The hopper goes through five moults. A moult is when the insect sheds its old skin. After each moult, the hopper looks more like an adult.

Most grasshoppers eat plants like grasses and cereal crops. Some species are even omnivorous and eat animal meat. They use special parts in their gut to digest food. Some can even use an enzyme called cellulase to soften plant walls.

When many grasshoppers gather in huge groups, they are called locusts. These swarms can move across wide areas. They can eat many crops and cause famine. This has been a problem for humans since Biblical times.

Humans and grasshoppers have a long history together. In countries like Mexico and Indonesia, people use them as food. They also appear in many stories, art, and books. People who study grasshoppers are called acridologists.

You might see them in your garden during the day. They are diurnal, which means they are most active while the sun is up. It is fun to watch how they jump and move.
