A recurve bow has a very special shape. Its limbs, or the long arms of the bow, curve away from the archer.

This shape helps the bow store more power. It also makes the arrow move with more speed. Because they are efficient, these bows can be shorter than straight bows. This was helpful for people riding horses.

A shorter bow is easier to use in forests or on a mount.

Many groups used recurve bows long ago. The Mongols used them to travel far. The Persians and the Chinese also used them. Some old bows were made of many parts. They used wood, horn, and sinew held together with glue.

Modern bows use new materials like carbon and fiberglass. Many are "take-down" bows. This means the limbs can come off the center part. The center part is called the riser. This makes the bow easy to carry and store. Archery takes great skill and practice.
