People used it for hunting and for war. It was very common in the 1300s and 1400s. Archers used these bows in big battles. They were very helpful during the Hundred Years' War.

However, they were not always successful. If archers did not have time to set up, they could lose.

Most longbows were made from yew wood. Making a bow was a slow way to work. It could take up to four years to make one.

The wood had a special shape. The outside was sapwood and the inside was heartwood. This helped the bow stay strong.

Using a longbow was very hard work. You had to pull the string with much force. This required a lot of practice. Some skeletons show that the archers had very strong arms. Later, guns began to replace the longbow. This happened because guns were easier to use than bows.
