The English longbow was a huge and powerful weapon used in the Middle Ages.

People used these bows for hunting and for fighting in wars. They were very important tools for both the English and the Welsh. By the 1300s, the longbow was a common sight on many battlefields. These bows could shoot arrows very far and with great force. This made them a major part of life during that time.

Making a longbow was a very slow and careful job. Most makers used wood from the yew tree. They had to dry the wood for one to two years first. Then, they worked the wood into shape over several more years. The whole process could take up to four years to finish.

The bow had a special D-shaped cross-section. The outside used sapwood to handle tension. The inside used heartwood to resist being crushed. This combination made the bow very strong and springy.

Longbows played a big role in many famous battles. They were very effective during the Hundred Years' War. English archers won important victories at Sluys in 1340 and Crécy in 1346. They also won at Poitiers in 1356 and Agincourt in 1415.

However, they were not always successful in every fight. At the Battle of Patay in 1429, French soldiers charged the archers before they could get ready. This showed that archers needed time to set up their defenses to win.

We know a lot about these bows from old shipwrecks. Most longbows from the years 1250 to 1450 did not survive. This is because wood gets weak after many uses and people threw them away. But many were found in the wreck of the Mary Rose. This was a ship belonging to King Henry VIII that sank in 1545.

Divers found 137 whole longbows and over 3,500 arrows there. The bows found on the ship were different sizes. They had an average length of about 71 inches.

Using a longbow was an extremely hard job for any person. You had to pull the string with a lot of strength. Some estimates say the pull force was over 100 pounds. This required many years of constant practice to master.

Skeletons of old archers show that their bones actually changed from this work. Their left arms and shoulders grew much larger and stronger. Eventually, guns began to replace the longbow in armies. This was because guns were easier to use than the heavy bows.
