A recurve bow is a special kind of tool used in archery. Its name comes from its unique shape. The limbs, or the long arms of the bow, curve away from the person shooting.

This clever design helps the bow store more energy. It also makes the arrow move with much more speed. Because they are so efficient, these bows can be shorter than straight bows. A shorter bow is easier to use in thick forests or while riding a horse.

Making a recurve bow involves many different parts working together. The center part is called the riser. The limbs attach to this rigid middle section. Many modern bows are "take-down" bows. This means you can detach the limbs from the riser for easy carrying.

To help with accuracy, archers use extra tools. They might use a bow sight to aim more easily. Some use a clicker, which is a small blade that clicks when the string is pulled to the right length. They may also use stabilizers, which are rods that help balance the bow.

People have used recurve bows for thousands of years. Ancient groups like the Persians, Mongols, and Chinese all used them. The Mongols used bows with a bamboo core and horn to travel from the Pacific to Europe.

In the second millennium BC, these bows spread across much of Asia and Egypt. Some old records, like those in the Bible, mention them as far back as the eighth century BC. Even the Roman Empire used composite recurve bows for their imperial archers.

History shows how different materials changed how bows worked. Long ago, people made composite bows by gluing wood, horn, and sinew together. These materials were very strong. In the Middle Ages, people in dry countries used these glued bows. In wetter areas, they often used wooden longbows instead. This is because moisture could make the glue lose its strength. Some Indigenous North American groups, especially on the West Coast, also used recurved bows. By the end of the 19th century, firearms began to replace bows in many wars.

Today, the recurve bow is a star in the world of sports. It is the only type of bow allowed in the Olympic Games.

Modern versions use advanced materials like carbon fiber and fiberglass. These new materials make the bows very consistent and easy to make. While they look different from ancient bows, they still follow the same basic idea. Whether used for sport or just for fun, the recurve bow remains a wonderful example of human skill and design.
