Black oaks make acorns. These nuts grow in groups of two to five. An acorn takes two years to grow. It has a large, scaly cap. The acorns are brown when they are ready. Animals like squirrels and birds eat many acorns. They help spread the seeds to new places.

This tree can handle fire well. It is a key part of oak savannas. Some bugs can hurt the tree. The gypsy moth eats the leaves. If it eats them too many years in a row, the tree may die. The inner bark has a yellow color. People once sold this color in Europe.
