The black oak is a very important tree in North America.

It belongs to the red oak group. Scientists call it Quercus velutina. The name velutina means velvety. This is because the tree has soft, velvety buds. These trees are found all across the eastern and central parts of the continent. They grow in many places from Maine all the way to Texas.

They can even be found inland in places like Michigan and Nebraska. These trees are very hardy. They can survive in many different kinds of landscapes.

There are many ways to recognize a black oak. The leaves have deep, U-shaped notches. They are shiny green on the top side. The bottom of the leaf is yellowish-brown. You might even see tiny clumps of hair on the underside.

The tree also makes acorns. These acorns grow in small groups of two to five. Each acorn has a large, scaly cap. It takes two years for an acorn to fully grow. When they are ripe, the acorns turn brown. They usually ripen between late August and late October.

People have known about this tree for a long time. It used to be called the yellow oak. This is because the inner bark has a yellow pigment. This pigment is called quercitron. People used to sell this yellow color in Europe. They did this for business until the 1940s. The tree is also famous for making new kinds of trees. It can mix with other red oaks to make hybrids. There are at least twelve named hybrids, like Bush's oak and Hawkin's oak.

Black oaks grow in many different environments. In the north, they are often smaller. They might grow to be 20 to 25 meters tall. In the south, they can grow much larger. Some reach heights of 42 meters.

They like to grow in places with well-drained soil. This soil can be made of sand, clay, or even limestone. They grow best on slopes and in coves. Some black oaks live in the southern Appalachians at high elevations. They can live as high as 1,200 meters.

Nature has many ways of interacting with the black oak. Many animals love to eat the acorns. Squirrels, mice, and birds like to eat them.

When animals move the seeds, they help new trees grow. Some insects can be a challenge for the tree. The gypsy moth eats the leaves. If the moth eats the leaves too many years in a row, the tree might die. However, black oaks are very good at handling fire. This helps them live in special places called oak savannas.
