Its bark is dark gray and has deep lines. The leaves have a very special shape. They have 14 to 20 small teeth on each side. These teeth look like the edge of a saw. This is how the tree got its name.

This tree has a unique way of making fruit. It grows acorns that take 18 months to mature.

These acorns are two different colors. The bottom half is orange. The top part is a green-brown color. The cap on the acorn is very fuzzy. It is covered in soft bristles that look like moss. The flowers on the tree use the wind to pollinate. This means the wind carries the pollen to help new seeds grow.

People first brought this tree to the United States around the 1920s.

It is native to many places in Asia. These places include China, Japan, Korea, and India. It also grows in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Today, it grows in many parts of the eastern United States. It can be found in states like New York and Florida. It has even become naturalized in North America. This means it grows there on its own now.

Because it grows so fast, this tree can be a problem.

It likes acid soil that drains water well. This helps it grow in many harsh places. The sawtooth oak can grow faster than trees that are native to the area. This makes it hard for other plants to compete. In some states like Louisiana, it is called an invasive species. Scientists say we should remove the small saplings. This helps protect the local ecosystem from being changed.

Many living things interact with this tree. The acorns are very bitter to taste. Jays and pigeons like to eat them. Squirrels only eat them when they run out of other food.

The tree sap can also leak from the trunk. Beetles and butterflies come to drink this sap. People also use the wood in different ways. The wood can crack or split easily. Because of this, people use it for making fences. In Japan, people make charcoal from this wood for tea ceremonies.
