It is an exoplanet, which is a planet outside our solar system. This world is very close to us. It orbits the closest star to our Sun. That star is a red dwarf called Proxima Centauri.

Proxima b orbits its star very quickly. One year there lasts only 11.2 Earth days. The planet is in the habitable zone. This is the area around a star where it is not too hot or too cold. This zone might allow liquid water to exist. We do not know if the planet has an atmosphere yet. An atmosphere is a layer of gases around a planet.

The star is a flare star. This means it lets out strong bursts of light. These flares might strip an atmosphere away. The planet might also be tidally locked. This means one side always faces the star.

If this is true, one side would be very hot. The other side would be very cold. Scientists used a method called Doppler spectroscopy to find it. This way uses light to see how a star moves. This motion shows a planet is pulling on it.
