TRAPPIST-1 is a small, red star.

It is a red dwarf. This means it is much smaller and cooler than our Sun. It is about 7.6 billion years old. That makes it older than our Solar System.

This star has seven known planets. They are all rocky worlds like Earth. The planets stay very close to the star. They move in fast, circular orbits. Some planets take only 1.5 days to orbit once. Most of these planets are tidally locked. This means one side always faces the star. That side stays in permanent day. The other side stays in permanent night.

Scientists found these planets by watching the star's light. When a planet passes in front of the star, the light dims. This is called a transit.

Four of the planets might have liquid water. This could make them hospitable to life. However, the star sends out many flares. These bright bursts of energy might change the planets' air. We do not know if they have atmospheres yet.
