This star is a red supergiant. A supergiant is a star that has grown very large.

Betelgeuse is much bigger than our Sun. It is between 640 and 764 times wider than the Sun. If it were in our Solar System, it would swallow Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. It would reach as far as the asteroid belt.

The star is also very heavy. It has a mass up to 20 times that of the Sun.

This star changes its brightness often. It is a variable star. This means its light goes up and down. In 2019, the star began to dim. Scientists think dust made by the star caused this.

One day, Betelgeuse will end with a supernova. A supernova is a massive star explosion. This might happen within 100,000 years. The blast will be very bright. It could look like the half-Moon for three months. However, life on Earth will stay safe.
