Hypergiants are very rare and special stars. They are much bigger and brighter than our Sun.

These stars have a lot of mass. They also have very strong stellar winds. These winds are streams of gas that blow away from the star. Because they lose so much gas, they do not live long. A hypergiant lives for only a few million years. Our Sun lives for about 10 billion years.

Some hypergiants are blue, some are yellow, and some are red. Scientists study them to learn how stars change over time. They also want to know how stars end their lives as a supernova. A supernova is a massive explosion of a star.

One famous example is the Pistol Star. It is a blue hypergiant near the center of our galaxy. Another is Rho Cassiopeiae. It is a yellow hypergiant that is very bright in the night sky. These stars are found in the largest areas where new stars are born. Because they live such short lives, we do not see many of them.
