Antares is a very bright star. It sits in the Scorpius constellation. Many people call it the "heart of the scorpion."

When you look at it, the star looks reddish. This color is like the planet Mars. Because of this, its name means "rival to Ares." Ares was a Greek god.

Antares is a red supergiant. This means it is a very large, old star. It is one of the biggest stars we can see without tools. If we put it in our solar system, it would reach the asteroid belt.

It is also a binary star. This means it is actually two stars orbiting each other. The main star is the giant red one. The second star is smaller and very hot. Antares also changes in brightness. It is a variable star. This means its light goes up and down slowly. The star even changes its size. It grows and shrinks by about 19 percent.

This happens because the star's outer layers pulse.
