It is part of a group called the Southern Cross. To our eyes, it looks like just one star. But it is actually a system of seven stars!

Most people see three stars through a small telescope. The two brightest are called Alpha Cru A and Alpha Cru B. These are B-type stars. This means they are very hot and bright. They are much bigger and heavier than our Sun. These two stars orbit each other. It takes about 1,300 years to finish one trip around each other.

There are even more stars in this group. One star is called Alpha Cru C. It is far away from the others. It also has a small companion star. This brings the total number of stars to seven. Acrux is very important to many people. You can see it on the flags of Australia and New Zealand. It is also on the flag of Brazil. It is the 13th brightest star in the night sky.
