Alpha Centauri is a group of three stars.

It is part of the Centaurus constellation. This group is very special because it is very close to our Sun.

Two stars in the group are very bright. They are called Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman. Together, they form a binary star system. A binary star system is two stars that orbit each other. To our eyes, they look like one single star. They are the third brightest stars in the night sky.

These two stars move in an oval path. This path is called an elliptical orbit. They take 79 years to go around each other.

The third star is Proxima Centauri. It is a small, red star. We call red stars red dwarfs.

Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our Sun. It is 4.2465 light-years away. This star has two known planets. One planet is about the size of Earth. The other is a smaller planet. Proxima Centauri can also flare. This means it suddenly gets much brighter.
