Alpha Centauri is a complex star system located in the southern constellation of Centaurus. 

The mechanics of the Alpha Centauri AB pair involve a complex orbital dance. Rigil Kentaurus and Toliman orbit around a common center of mass. Their path is an elliptical orbit, which is an oval-shaped trajectory. This orbit is also described as eccentric, meaning it is not a perfect circle. Because of this eccentricity, the distance between the two stars changes significantly over time. At their closest approach, they are 35.6 astronomical units (AU) apart. This distance is roughly equivalent to the gap between Pluto and our Sun. At their farthest point, they reach 63.5 AU. This is similar to the distance between Saturn and our Sun. It takes approximately 79 years for the pair to complete one full orbit.
The three stars in the system are quite different in size and type. Rigil Kentaurus is a Sun-like star classified as a G-type star. It is slightly larger and brighter than our Sun, with 1.1 times the mass and 1.5 times the luminosity. Toliman is also Sun-like but is a K-type star. This means Toliman is smaller and cooler than Rigil Kentaurus. The third member of the system is Proxima Centauri. Proxima is a small, faint red dwarf, which is an M-type star. While it is part of the larger system, it is actually the closest star to our Sun. It sits at a distance of 4.2465 light-years from Earth.
Humanity has tracked these stars for many centuries. The name Alpha Centauri was first assigned by J. Bayer in 1603. The constellation Centaurus is named after a creature from Greek mythology. In 1915, Robert T. A. Innes discovered Proxima Centauri using photographic plates. He suggested the name Proxima Centaurus because it was the closest star discovered at that time. 
Proxima Centauri is a particularly interesting subject for modern study due to its planets. 
Proxima Centauri also exhibits unique behavior known as being a flare star. This means it is a UV Ceti star that can undergo sudden, rapid brightenings. In August 2015, the star experienced its largest recorded flares. During one event on 13 August, the star became 8.3 times brighter than normal in the blue light region. These outbursts can last for only a few minutes before fading. Astronomers use both optical and radio telescopes to monitor these sudden changes in brightness. This activity provides important data about the behavior of small red dwarf stars.
