Ancient Egyptians watched Sirius to predict the flooding of the Nile. They worshipped the star as the goddess Sopdet. The Greeks saw the star's rising as a sign of hot summer. They called these the "dog days." In the Pacific Ocean, Polynesians used Sirius for navigation. It helped them travel across the sea. For the Māori, the star was named Takurua. In Hawaii, it was called Ka'ulua, or the "Queen of Heaven."

Astronomers have studied Sirius for a very long time. In 1717, Edmond Halley noticed that stars move over time. He found that Sirius was moving toward the southwest.

In 1844, Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel used math to guess a companion star existed. He saw changes in how Sirius moved. Later, in 1862, Alvan Graham Clark actually saw Sirius B. He used a very large telescope to find it. This was the first time the dim white dwarf was observed. Since then, we have measured its distance very carefully. We now know it is about 8.6 light-years away.

Sirius tells us a story about how stars live and change. The system is between 200 and 300 million years old. It used to have two bright, bluish stars.

One star was more massive than the other. That star used up its hydrogen fuel. It became a red giant before it collapsed. It is now the white dwarf we see as Sirius B. This happened about 120 million years ago. One day, a star called Vega will become the brightest star. That will happen in about 210,000 years.

For the Māori, the star was known as Takurua and marked the onset of winter. In Hawaii, it was honored as Ka'ulua, the "Queen of Heaven."

Astronomical understanding of Sirius has improved significantly over time. In 1717, Edmond Halley discovered that stars possess "proper motion," meaning they move through space. He noted that Sirius had progressed southwest since ancient times. In 1844, German astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel used mathematical deductions to predict a companion star. He noticed irregularities in the motion of Sirius A. On January 31, 1862, Alvan Graham Clark finally observed Sirius B. He used a massive new refracting telescope to see the faint white dwarf.

Modern measurements have provided precise data about the system. We now know Sirius is approximately 8.6 light-years away. This distance is determined using parallax, which is the apparent shift of a star against the background. While Sirius remains the brightest star for now, this will change. In about 210,000 years, the star Vega will become the brightest star in the sky. Although Vega is more intrinsically luminous, Sirius will remain the brightest for a very long time.
