Acrux is a very bright star system in the southern sky.

It is the brightest star in the constellation Crux. This constellation is also known as the Southern Cross. To our eyes, Acrux looks like a single point of light. However, it is actually a complex group of seven stars. It is the 13th-brightest star in the night sky. Because it is so far south, you can only see it from certain places. It barely rises for people in Miami or Karachi.

This system works by having many stars orbiting one another. The two brightest stars are called Alpha Cru A and Alpha Cru B. These are B-type stars, which means they are very hot and bright. They are much more massive and luminous than our Sun. These two stars orbit each other very slowly. It takes about 1,300 years to complete one orbit. Inside this pair, there are even smaller stars orbiting each other. For example, the components of Alpha Cru A take about 75.7 days to orbit. These different layers of movement make the system very busy.

People have been studying these stars for a long time. A Jesuit priest recognized Acrux as a binary system in 1685. This was the second time anyone had ever discovered such a system. Later, in 1829, James Dunlop found a third star called Alpha Cru C. He saw it as a companion while working in New South Wales. In 1916, scientists found that Alpha Cru C is also a binary. Another small star, Alpha Cru D, was found much later in 1999. It was discovered using special infrared tools called adaptive optics.

There are many specific details about these stars. The star Alpha Cru A is about 17 times more massive than the Sun. It has a temperature of about 29,000 Kelvin. Scientists think it might one day expand into a red supergiant. This is similar to the star Betelgeuse. Alpha Cru C is about 4.5 times more massive than the Sun. The smallest star, Alpha Cru D, is a red dwarf. It has only half the mass of our Sun. These numbers show how much larger Acrux is than our own solar system.

Acrux is a famous sight in many parts of the world. You can see it on the flags of Australia and New Zealand. It is also on the flags of Samoa and Papua New Guinea. In Brazil, the star represents the state of São Paulo. It even appears on the Brazilian passport. The star is part of a shape many people recognize. This shape helps travelers find their way in the southern sky. It is a wonderful example of how many stars can live together.
