Achernar is a brilliant blue star in the sky.

It is the brightest star in the constellation Eridanus. This star is also the ninth brightest star in the whole night sky. It is actually a binary system. This means it is made of two stars orbiting each other. The main star is called Alpha Eridani A. Its smaller companion is known as Achernar B.

This second star is a different type of star. It orbits the main star every seven years.

This star works in a very unusual way. Achernar spins at an extremely rapid speed. This fast spinning makes the star change its shape. It is not a perfect sphere like a ball. Instead, it is an oblate spheroid. This means it is flattened at the top and bottom. The middle part is much wider than the poles. In fact, the middle is 35% wider than the top.

This shape causes the temperature to change across the star. The poles are much hotter than the middle part. These hot poles create a fast wind of gas. This gas forms a disk around the star.

Many different people have given this star special names. The name Achernar comes from an Arabic phrase. It means "The End of the River."

In China, it is part of a group called Crooked Running Water. The Boorong people of Australia call it Yerrerdetkurrk. The Wardaman people call it Gawalyan, which means the echidna. The International Astronomical Union approved the name Achernar in June 2016. This name is now on their official list of star names.

There are many interesting numbers to know about Achernar. It is about six to seven times the mass of our Sun. Its radius is about eight times larger than the Sun. The star is also 3,000 times more luminous. This means it shines much brighter than our Sun. The temperature at the poles is very high. The temperature at the equator is much lower.

The brightness of the star can change by about 6%. This happens as the star pulsates or as its gas disk changes.

People can see Achernar in different ways depending on where they live. It is best to see it in the Southern Hemisphere during November. If you live in the south of Africa, it stays very low. If you live even further south, it stays in the sky all night. In the past, the star was much further south. Because of this, the Ancient Egyptians could not see it. It will slowly move north over many thousands of years. Eventually, people in places like Germany will be able to see it.
