Procyon is a very bright star in the night sky. It is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor. In our sky, it is usually the eighth-brightest star. It has a white color with a faint yellow tinge.

This star is one of our closest stellar neighbors. The European Space Agency Hipparcos satellite found it is only 11.4 light-years away. It is also a key part of the Winter Triangle. This shape in the sky uses Procyon, Sirius, and Betelgeuse as its corners.

Procyon is actually a binary star system. This means it is made of two stars orbiting each other. The main star is Procyon A. It is a white-hued star that is 1.5 times the mass of our Sun. Procyon A is also twice the size of the Sun. The second star is Procyon B. It is a faint white dwarf.

These two stars move in an oval path called an elliptical orbit. They take 40.84 years to complete one full trip around each other.

Scientists have studied Procyon for a long time. A German astronomer named Friedrich Bessel thought Procyon B existed in 1844. He used math to guess its position. Later, Arthur Auwers calculated its orbit in 1862. It took many more years to actually see the small star. John Martin Schaeberle finally saw Procyon B in 1896. He used a large 36-inch refractor at Lick Observatory to find it.

Procyon A is changing as it gets older. It is a late-stage star. It is evolving into a subgiant. This happens because it is nearly finished turning hydrogen into helium in its core. Soon, the star will expand much more. It might grow to be 80 to 150 times its current size.

When this happens, it will likely turn red or orange. This change might happen in 10 to 100 million years.

Many different cultures have given Procyon special names. The name Procyon comes from Ancient Greek. It means "before the dog." This is because it rises before the Dog Star, Sirius.

In China, it is part of the South River asterism. In Hawaii, it is called Puana, which means blossom. The Kalapalo people of Brazil call it Kofongo, or Duck. For them, the star's appearance meant the rainy season was coming. Many people throughout history have looked up and wondered about this bright light.
