Proxima Centauri b

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Proxima Centauri b is a very special world located in the constellation Centaurus. It is an exoplanet, which is a planet that orbits a star outside our own solar system.

This planet is famous because it is the closest known exoplanet to Earth. It orbits a small, red star called Proxima Centauri. This star is the closest star to our Sun. Proxima Centauri is part of a larger group of three stars called the Alpha Centauri system. Because it is so close, scientists think it is a great place to study with robots.

The planet stays in a place called the habitable zone. This is the area around a star where it is not too hot and not too cold. Because of this, liquid water might be able to stay on the surface.

Proxima b orbits its star very fast. One year on this planet lasts only about 11.2 Earth days. It is much closer to its star than Earth is to our Sun. The planet might be a terrestrial planet, which means it has a rocky surface like Earth. It has a minimum mass that is similar to our own world. However, its exact size and what it is made of are still being studied.

Finding this planet was a big job for many scientists. In January 2016, a group started the Pale Red Dot project. They wanted to see if this mystery planet really existed. They used a method called Doppler spectroscopy to find it. This way of looking at stars measures how they move. When a planet orbits a star, its gravity pulls on the star slightly. This makes the star wobble back and forth.

On August 24, 2016, a team led by Anglada-Escudé announced they had confirmed the planet's discovery.

There are many interesting facts about this star system. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star. It is much smaller and cooler than our Sun. It has about 12.2% of the Sun's mass. The star is also a flare star. This means it can have sudden, intense bursts of radiation. These flares are very strong and could strip an atmosphere away from a planet.

The star is located about 4.2 light-years away from us. While it is close in space terms, it is too faint to see without a telescope.

Thinking about Proxima b helps us understand other worlds. It might be tidally locked to its star. This means one side always faces the star and the other side always faces away. If this happens, one side would be very hot and the other very cold.

Scientists use models to guess what the weather might be like. They wonder if there are big oceans or even just ice. Studying this planet helps us learn how common planets are around small, red stars. It shows us how different life might look in other parts of the galaxy.
