Tabby's Star is a very unusual star located in the Cygnus constellation.

This star is part of a binary system, which means it has a companion. That companion is a small red dwarf star. The main star is an F-type main-sequence star. It is roughly halfway between the stars Deneb and Delta Cygni. You cannot see it with your naked eye. You would need a telescope and a dark sky to find it. It is a subject of great interest because its light is not steady.

Most stars shine with a constant brightness. However, Tabby's Star has unusual light fluctuations. This means its brightness changes in strange ways. In 2011, the star dimmed by up to 15%.

Two years later, it dimmed by as much as 22%. A planet the size of Jupiter only blocks 1% of a star's light. These dips are much larger than a planet could cause. Something much bigger is blocking the light. This makes the star's light curve very irregular and hard to predict.

Astronomer Tabetha S. Boyajian led the team that studied these dips.

She published her findings in a scientific paper in 2015. Because of her work, people call it Boyajian's Star. Some people also call it the WTF Star. This nickname comes from the paper's subtitle, "where's the flux?". Flux is just a word for the light coming from the star. The star was first seen in catalogs as far back as 1890. It was later found by the Kepler space telescope.

Scientists have many ideas about why the light dips.

Some thought an alien megastructure might be orbiting the star. A megastructure is a huge object built by a civilization. Most evidence makes scientists doubt this idea. In 2019, researchers suggested a different cause. They thought fragments from a broken exomoon might be the reason. These pieces of a moon could be orbiting the star. They would block the light as they move through space.

Other ideas include clouds of interstellar dust or many large planets.

Some even thought it could be an asteroid field. Astronomers still use tools like the TESS satellite to watch it. They monitor the star to see if the dips happen again. Watching these changes helps us understand how stars and moons work. Even though it is far away, it teaches us about the universe. The mystery of Tabby's Star continues to grow every year.
